A customised polypropylene oxygen barrier packaging from RPC Superfos has been awarded with a Scanstar 2013. Executive VP and Technology Director Benny Nielsen from RPC Superfos HQ is more than pleased with the news and proud to receive this valuable recognition.
“It is fantastic to get a Scanstar. We are very proud and happy, because the award stresses that our barrier solution is in fact unique,” says Benny Nielsen. He explains why the solution is remarkable:
“For the award winning customised solution we have united several methods to establish an oxygen barrier in one single packaging. First, we create an oxygen barrier thanks to embedded barrier labels which fully cover the entire pack. Secondly, we embed additional barrier material in the middle of the packaging thanks to the two-component sandwich construction. And finally, we use virgin material which is approved for treatment under high temperatures and for autoclaving.”
New option for food producers
The packaging design is extremely flexible and can easily be adapted to many types of foodstuff which require an airtight storage. The three parameters can be adjusted according to any product filled into the packaging and its need for subsequent processing.
Many food producers consider improved packaging as one of the ways to retain customer loyalty and to increase sales. Executive VP CSO Søren Marcussen explains:
“The food industry now has another award winning packaging option that withstands high temperatures, hot filling and autoclaving. All the same, as it is a plastic packaging, it has a fresh, contemporary aspect and a strong consumer appeal.”
Two years under ambient temperature
RPC Superfos developed the award winning solution especially for Bornholms, a market leader in seafood in Scandinavia. The series of four types of packaging with the new oxygen barrier solution replaces metal cans. Combined with a membrane sealing, the plastic packaging leads to a two-year shelf life at ambient temperatures for selected seafood products.
Next step is a WorldStar nomination
It was a jury of packaging experts from Finland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark that decided to award this solution with the prestigious Scanstar Award 2013. The award entitles RPC Superfos to nominate it for a WorldStar.
The official Scanstar ceremony takes place in Helsinki, Finland, at the beginning of September 2013 at the occasion of the trade fair PacTec 2013.
