New energy-efficient cooling units in Wetteren

The right temperature in production halls is decisive for keeping packaging materials in perfect condition at all times – not too cold, not to hot. For this purpose, new energy-efficient cooling units have just been installed at the RPC Superfos facility in Wetteren, Belgium.

Reduced energy and water consumption as well as perfect production temperatures are the results of new cooling units at the facility in Wetteren, Belgium, Region Central. The units perform extremely well: Energy consumption has been reduced by 50 per cent and the water usage is 60 per cent below the prior level.

More sustainable production
The cooling units ensure mould cooling and during summer also air conditioning of the production halls. The new units make this possible in a significantly more environmental way than before. The RPC Superfos facility in Wetteren is ISO14001 certified and this new step towards a more sustainable way of production seems only natural.

Factory Manager, Flemming Madsen, RPC Superfos Wetteren, explains:

“More and more customers pay attention to sustainability and the new cooling units at our facility are a contribution to a more environmentally friendly way of producing plastic packaging. We have invested in two ammonium-based cooling units that give us the best performance. For each 1kW power we put in, we get 6kW cooling out.”

Good payback period
The new cooling units do not use any CFC gasses and significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the production. The investment is considerable, but the payback period is good. Flemming Madsen stresses that only the best options have been selected in all aspects. This combined with the ISO 14001 certificate resulted in various governmental premiums and subsidies from the local utility company.

“We use highly efficient motors and frequency controllers and the best type of cooling fluid, so now we can keep the right temperature at the production hall with endorsement from all stakeholders, including customers, employees and public bodies.”
