Berry Superfos wins award for recycling project

In a highly competitive field of entries, Berry Superfos emerged as the recipient of the prestigious 2023 Horners Bottlemakers Award for its initiative to recycle paint containers in a closed-loop system.

Berry Superfos has recently added another award to its collection, this time for a ground-breaking project focused on used paint containers. The award in question is the esteemed Horners Bottlemakers Award.

The jury explained their choice of the Berry Closed-Loop Paint Container Solution as winner of the award for 2023 in the following manner:

“The initiative marks an important step in the recycling of containers that have residual material in them, in that the challenges in both the washing process and the recovery and reuse of the containers have been overcome. All our Awards have a sustainability component within their criteria and the entry of Berry Superfos certainly sits very well within this ethos.”

The judges noted that the 2023 Horners Bottlemakers Award featured a highly competitive array of submissions.

Closed loop obtained through circular partnership
The closed loop solution involves the establishment of a circular partnership between Berry Superfos, Paint360, a paint recycling and recovery social enterprise organisation, and Berry Circular Polymers. Under the initiative, the three partners collaborate to collect waste paint, re-engineer it into new paint and recycle the used paint plastic containers into new paint cans for the recovered paint.

This solution significantly reduces the environmental impact of both the paint and its packaging by decreasing the amount of waste sent to landfills and the carbon emissions associated with incineration.

Søren Rohleder, CEO of Berry Superfos, explains: "In the realm of the paint industry, circular economy advancements greatly benefit from the incorporation of closed-loop systems. Such systems enable producers to meet consumer demands for more sustainable solutions and comply with regulatory requirements like Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).”

Third award for the project
This marks the third award for this pioneering project. In addition to the Horners Bottlemakers Award, it has previously received two other prestigious awards: the Plastics Industry Award and the RECOUP Award.

The paint containers that go into the solution are produced at Berry Superfos’ Oakham facility.
