Re-designed cups for the dairy producer TINE win their second award

The designed-for-recycling sleeve on Berry Superfos cups, developed for the leading Norwegian dairy company TINE, recently won a 2023 AWA International Award.

In 2022, Berry Superfos assisted TINE, Norway’s largest dairy company, in transitioning to cups made with 50% recycled polypropylene (rPP) for a portion of its product assortment, including sour cream and 'rømme,' a popular Norwegian fusion of sour creams and cream.

Now, TINE’s cups have been honoured with the 2023 AWA International Sleeve Label Award for the innovative 'designed-for-recycling' sleeve of the cups. The award, given in the Sustainable Contribution category, considers aspects of the printing process, registration, colour complexity, and graphic alignment of the label. It reflects the 'designed-for-recycling' standards set by the non-profit cross-industry RecyClass initiative.

Earlier, TINE’s re-designed cups also earned the Norwegian Plastic Promise Award in the category of 'Increased Use of Recycled Plastic,' making the AWA Award the second accolade for the cups.

Designed for recycling
The award was given to Masterpress, the company that produces the shrink sleeve for Berry Superfos. Masterpress is a leading European provider of printed decorative packaging solutions. Roland Lingman, Key Account Director at Berry Superfos, says:

“We are very proud to be part of this solution, which is helping TINE meet its sustainability commitments, and we congratulate Masterpress on the well-deserved recognition its sleeve has achieved as part of this collaborative project.”

The solution
The low-density, 45-micron polyolefin (PO) shrink sleeve uses film supplied by Taghleef Industries on the PP cup. This combination facilitates the correct identification and recycling of the cups in the appropriate polymer stream.

Heat-activated adhesives for the sleeve have also been employed to maintain consistency during application and shrinking. By using a combination of printing methods for the Berry cups, Masterpress achieved superior results and exceptional print quality.
