Packaging for blind people are gaining ground

Today, blind and partially-sighted people often have to guess what the fridge has to offer. Now the first steps have been taken to introduce food packaging solutions with braille

Mozzarella from Francia in Italy in a new packaging solution developed by the packaging manufacturer Superfos is one of the first fast moving consumer goods in Europe with braille on-pack. (Braille is a raised-dot alphabet, which enables blind people and partially-sighted people to read by finger touch). Thereby, Francia can now communicate to this customer segment that the packaging contains mozzarella. This is relevant both at home when you have to find food in the fridge and at the supermarket when shopping.

Colin Low, President of the European Blind Union (EBU) says:
"It is important that information is made accessible to blind and partially sighted people by the use of alternative formats such as Braille, large print, audio over the telephone etc. Braille on packaging is a significant step in the right direction and something we hope will become increasingly widespread. Over time, we hope that it will also be possible to write the expiry date on the package and a phone number that blind or partially sighted people can call in order to get more information about the food ingredients."
